Raja Ampat -- home to the world's highest marine biodiversity and a globally recognised diving destination -- faced a structural challenge: the economic benefits of tourism were not reaching local Papuan communities at scale. Tourism development was driven largely by outside investors and operators, while indigenous communities remained peripheral to the value chain. A community-centred approach was needed to ensure that tourism growth translated into measurable local benefit.

Mercury pollution in water near goldmines, cement plants, and heavy industries burning fossil fuels poses severe health risks globally -- particularly in developing countries where remediation technology is too expensive or technically complex to deploy at scale. Existing sorbents required costly inputs and generated secondary waste streams.

Indonesia generates 68.5 million tonnes of waste annually, yet recycling coverage remains below 25%. Waste banks -- community-based recycling initiatives -- had proliferated across Indonesia, but documentation of their effectiveness in smaller regencies (outside major cities) was almost entirely absent from the literature, limiting evidence-based policy design at the local government level.

Challenge

Irrigated agriculture in Indonesia -- particularly sugarcane cultivation in East Java -- faces increasing pressure from climate variability, water scarcity, and inefficient irrigation scheduling. The absence of real-time soil moisture monitoring and data-driven decision support meant that water was frequently over- or under-applied, reducing crop yield and wasting a critical resource.

Challenge

Low-rank coal (lignite) dominates fuel use in Indonesian coal-fired power plants but contains high moisture content, which reduces combustion efficiency and increases the cost of electricity production. Conventional coal drying methods rely on steam, fuel oil, or electrical energy as heat sources -- adding new operational cost rather than recovering waste energy already generated within the plant system.
